Expressions Northwest
A Celebration of Creating & Living in the Pacific Northwest

Juror: David Sessions, exhibit curator Bainbridge Arts & Crafts on Bainbridge Island, WA.

At Northwind Arts Center

701 Water Street
Port Townsend, WA
Open hours: Wed.– Mon. 11:30 am – 5:30 pm

Schedule of exhibit events

  • August 9, 5:30 – 7:30 pm – Opening Reception & Awards Presentation
  • August 6, 7 – 8:30 pm Ekphrastic Write in
  • August 10, 1 pm Juror Talk
  • August 22, 1 pm Ekphrastic Reading

What the heck does Ekphrastic mean? Wikipedia says “The word ekphrasis, or ecphrasis, comes from the Greek for the description of a work of art produced as a rhetorical exercise, often used in the adjectival form ekphrastic. It is a vivid, often dramatic, verbal description of a visual work of art, either real or imagined.” — This should be interesting!

If you’re nearby or passing through Port Townsend stop in and check it out.

Port Townsend August 2019 events

Port Townsend is a busy town in the summer. A lot’s happening this August. Here are some highlights: Jazz Port Townsend; Shakespeare in the Park; the hip and now THING music festival at Fort Worden (Aug. 24-25); Olympic Music Festival for classical music lovers; Port Townsend Studio Tour (Aug. 17-18); and Jefferson County Fair (Aug. 9-11).

The Port Townsend Farmers Market is da best (from what I hear). I’ll be heading there to finally check it out Sat., Aug. 10 on my way to the Juror Talk. The Northwind Art Center is on Water Street, where there are lots of interesting shops and places to eat. We always stop into William James Booksellers. They have an excellent, well-organized offering of used books, including art books.

So there are plenty of reasons to get to Port Townsend in August. I hope locals and visitors take time to stop by Northwinds Arts Center to see the Expressions Northwest art show.

Bainbridge Island Studio Tour Nov. 30 – Dec. 2, 2018

November 16, 2018 · Lel ·

Green and blue moody abstract painting by Lel Newman

First timer!

This will be the first time I’ve participated in the Bainbridge Island Studio Tour, or any multi-day art fair. I think I’m ready. I’m a fan of the tour, and have enjoyed being a patron ever since my husband started showing his work there some years ago. All the venues are warm and welcoming with a festive atmosphere (and treats). Thanks to encouragement from friends I applied and was juried in! I will be at the Robert Spangler Studio on the south end of the island (8495 NE Oddfellows Road).

  • Blue, gray, red-orange geometric shaped abstract artwork by Lel Newman
  • Green and blue moody abstract painting by Lel Newman

I’m showing my limited edition abstract prints — the bold, graphic Shapemaking series, and expressive digital paintings. I’d love for you to see them in-person.

Bainbridge Island Studio Winter Tour – Nov. 30, Dec. 1 & 2 – 10 am to 5 pm

STUDIO 1 –  Robert Spangler Studio – 8495 NE Oddfellows Road, Bainbridge Island

There are eight venues and 59 artists on the tour! Here’s the brochure from the Bainbridge Island Studio Tour website (PDF).

My studio mates

Also exhibiting in the Spangler Studio will be my husband, Tim Celeski (wood furniture and sculpture), Susan Arens (encaustic paintings), Linda Ricci (porcelain pottery), and Brian Goodman (Photography).

Robert Spangler Studio

Studio 1 hosts, Bob Spangler and Birgit Josenhans are delightful people and talented woodworkers. They design and build contemporary furniture that is drool worthy. I got a sneak peek at some of pieces that will be available at the show, including a new chair design. If you’re a fan of modern furniture design you must see this new piece. I know this is where a photo should be, but I’ll leave that for Bob to unveil on his website, or better yet come see if for yourself in his spacious wood shop on the south end of the island. In the mean time Bob’s Instagram is below.

Take a mini vacation on Bainbridge Island

Bainbridge Island is a fun, easy excursion for Seattle residents, drive on the ferry at Colman dock in Seattle and spend a day on the island. It’s another world.

A ferry ride is so much more pleasant that sitting is I-5 gridlock. On the island see some big trees and peruse fine arts and crafts. Discover a new artist and maybe find the perfect gift for a dear one (or yourself). The BIST venues have treats, but you always could grab a cinnamon roll and coffee at Blackbird Bakery, or try the new Coquette Bake Shop kiosk everyone is raving about, both are in Winslow. Sounds delicious all around!

No. 58 becomes Landing Party

Landing Party

“Landing Party” is one of the few of my Shapemaking artworks that have a non-numerical title. When my husband suggested it I instantly got it. I said “Yes! that’s perfect”. So far, no one else has instantly “got it”. Do you get it? I explain below, but first, let me tell you a little about my trouble with titles.

Naming abstract artwork is not easy for me

The process of making the artwork is what I enjoy most. Making shapes, modifying the form, space, and color to the point I’m satisfied and feel that jolt of art-joy. I hope the viewer will feel the same. I’m done, so what’s next? Oh the hard part for me… giving the artwork a title. If I plan to share the work on Instagram, as I often do, I’m kinda in a hurry so I will usually just date it and not bother with a title. I can worry about that later.
