Modern Touch 2 features the work of 8 artists who all create work that is modernist in feeling and is created using unconventional and decidedly modern techniques… or traditional techniques used in new ways:

  • Ruth Hesse, ceramic artist and printmaker
  • Michelle Crowe, ceramic artist
  • Leslie Newman, digital painter
  • Claudia Meyer Newman, printmaker and photographer
  • Tracy Simpson, printmaker
  • Karin Schminke, mixed media
  • Mona Smiley Fairbanks, monotype prints
  • David Owen Hastings, monotype prints and collages

These artists create primarily abstract work that fits nicely in a mid-century vibe. Ruth Hesse has been a monotype artist for many years, and has recently taken off with creating beautiful ceramic vessels, each with a life of its own. Michelle Crowe, a ceramic artist, will join us with her latest work. Claudia Meyer Newman (no relation) marries her love of photography with hands-on monotype printmaking. Tracy Simpson creates beautiful, complex and textural prints using humble materials: potatoes and paint. Karin Schminke works with wood, aluminum and other substrates to create dimensional, and often pierced, artworks where light plays a major role. Mona Smiley Fairbanks is the consummate collage artist, blending monotype prints with fiber arts, wood, metal and more. David Owen Hastings’ pieces are modern takes on traditional quilts, using monotype, stitching and collage.
